Error Messages

Whenever you go to particular websites you can see an error messages indicating that the website cannot be opened
or the request has been stopped working. So keeping in mind that this error may present itself in more ways than the common ones listed below:

• "404 Error"
• "Page cannot be displayed"
• "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage"
• "404: Not Found"
• "The page cannot be found"
• "Error 404: NOT FOUND"
• "HTTP 404 - File not found"
• "Not Found"

So lets start with the first issue, i would say,

The first error "404 Error" is displayed inside the Internet Browser Window. It is an HTTP STATUS CODE that means the page that we are trying to reach could not be found on the web site's server for the present time.

These error's can be fixed up by doing some simple steps as mentioned below lets see..

1. Just click the Refresh/Reload button or trying the URL from the address in the address bar.This 404 Error occurs on occasionaly even there is no real issue so by just doing this simple refresh/reload we can view the page that we are looking for.

2.Basic mistake that occurs in this type is that the URL might be typed wrong or the link that
was clicked on points to the wrong URL. So kindly check this issue i would say :)

3.Try to search for that particular page (i.e) if you move all the way up to the website's
main page, try to run a search for the information you're looking for. If its not available try finding the information by using the links from this page.

4.Sometimes the page that you are looking for might be in any issue, so at that time try to enter the webpage in online tool and it will tell you just if the site is down for everyone or if the problem is on your end or somewhere else.

5.If the page is still not working then move up one directory level at a time in the URL until you find something. For example,if www.w.com/a/b/c.htm gave you the 404 Not Found error, move up to www.w.com/a/b/. If you get nothing here, move up to www.w.com/a/.
This should lead you towards what you're looking for or at least confirm that it's no longer available.So that you can go for the next step :-D

6.Finally, if all this fails, you may want to attempt to contact the webmaster for information on
where you might locate the page you're looking for.So just reach them by their email.

Earth AV

Earth AV is another addition to the list of "rogue antivirus program" currently populating the internet AV virus is propagated similarly to other software of the same kind. A Trojan is being utilized to drop a copy and install it on computer without being detected by antivirus program present on the compromised computer. A malicious and scam website is another means to transfer Earth AV on visitors computer.

It will pretend as an online virus scanner that will run a virus scan and presents numerous detected threats on the computer. A prompt to buy the registration key of Earth AV is followed and when click, a new browser window will open containing the payment processing method usually via credit card or Paypal.

Just like its predecessor, Green AV and Eco Antivirus, will flood the computer with fake alerts and misleading warning messages. A local virus scan will also launch each time the computer is started. Dozens of threats will be displayed and inform users that the only solution to remove Earth AV is by getting the licensed version of it. Manual Removal:

2. If there are antivirus programs installed, connect to Internet and update it to have the latest database and pattern files.

3. Sscan the computer and clean/delete all infected files thoroughly. Check if there are remnants of virus-related files, delete if found, if found please delete it.

5. Close registry editor, changes will be save automatically.

6. Remove Earth AV start-up entry by going to Start > Run, type msconfig on the “Open” dialog box. System Configuration Utility will open.

7.Go to Startup tab and uncheck the following Startup item(s):

msdl.exe
vec.exe

7. Click on Apply and reboot the computer for changes to take effect.

Earth AV Removal Tool:
For automatic removal of this malware, please download and run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. There are instances that Earth AV Trojan will block the downloading execution of security application. On this situation, please download the file from an uninfected computer and rename it before installing on the infected computer.

Volume Control

The volume icon does not appear in the notification area (system tray)

Go to Start/Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices. On the Volume Tab under Device Volume, put a check in the box that reads: Place volume icon in the taskbar.

If that has been tried:

Place your XP CD in then go to Start/Run and type in:
EXPAND -R X:\I386\powrprof.dl_ C:\Windows\System32

Once done: Go to Start/Run and type in: regsvr32 stobject.dll

Lastly, run this edit: Restore Volume and Net Icon in the Notification Area

Other Checkpoints:

Make sure Hide Inactive is disabled in Taskbar Properties. In Sound and Audio Devices Properties, make sure "Place volume icon in the taskbar" is checked. If it still doesn't work, here are two workarounds:

Go to Start/Log off (log off then log back on).
Right-click the taskbar & select Task Manager under Processes tab select Explorer.Exe & End Task. Under Applications tab select New Task, type in "explorer" and click OK.

Volume Control - Error Message

If the above hasn't helped and you have received this error:

Windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar because the Volume Control program has not been installed. To install it use Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.

To resolve this issue, extract a new copy of Sndvol32.exe from the Windows XP CD to the system_root \System32 folder on your computer's hard disk. To do this, follow these steps:

Start/Run/CMD. In the command prompt window type:

X: (where X is your CD Drive letter)
CD \I386

Then use the expand command: expand -r sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32

Note: This assumes XP is installed on C: and that its installed in the Windows folder. If not, you'll need to adjust the command accordingly. Additionally, this must be an installable version of XP, not a "recovery CD".

When you attempt to record (burn) data to a compact disc recordable (CD-R) drive or compact disc rewritable (CD-RW) drive, you may not have the option to send data to the CD-ROM drive. To resolve this issue, edit the Windows registry to identify the CD-R drive or CD-RW drive as a recordable drive. To do this, follow these steps.

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
Expand the following registry subkey:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD Burning\Drives
On the File menu, click Export.
In the File name box, type backup of drives key, and then click Save .

NOTE: You can restore this registry subkey by double-clicking the backup of drives key.reg file that you saved.
In the left pane of the Registry Editor window, click the Volume{ GUID } folder under Drives , where GUID is a 32-character hexadecimal globally unique identifier.

NOTE: If you have more than one CD-ROM drive in the computer, an additional Volume{ GUID } folder is listed for each drive.
In the right pane of the Registry Editor window, double-click Drive Type.
In the Value data box, type 1 or 2 , depending on the drive type, and then click OK. The drive type should be 1 if it is a CD-R and 2 if it is a CD-RW.
Quit Registry Editor.
Click Start , and then click My Computer.
Under Devices with Removable Storage , right-click the CD-R drive or CD-RW drive, and then click Properties on the shortcut menu that appears.
If the Recording tab is displayed, the drive is successfully recognized by Windows as a recordable device.
Click Cancel .

NOTE: If you have more than one CD-ROM drive, DVD-ROM drive, or CD-RW drive in the computer and the Recording tab is not displayed, an incorrect drive may have been configured as "recordable" in the Windows registry. To troubleshoot this issue, follow these steps:
1. Follow steps 1 through 9 to edit the Drive Type value of the Volume{ GUID } folder whose value you previously changed.
2. In the Value data box, type 3 , and then click OK. The drive type value of 3 indicates that the drive is a standard CD-ROM and is not writable.
3. In the left pane of the Registry Editor window, click the next Volume{ GUID } folder.
4. Follow steps 7 through 8 to change the Value data entry to 1 or 2 , depending on the drive type.
5. Quit Registry Editor, and then follow steps 10 through 12 to confirm that the Recording tab is displayed in the properties dialog box of the CD-R drive or CD-RW drive.

Note that this may not work in all cases. This is only a workaround in a situation where the CD-R drive or CD-RW drive is capable of functioning in Windows XP and for some reason has been misidentified. If the drive is not on the Hardware Compatibility List (HCL), the drive may not work with the built-in CD copying functionality, regardless of this registry setting.

Add New Hardware Error Message:

"Found New Hardware Wizard" advises, "Cannot install this Hardware. There was a problem installing this hardware: PCI Simple Communications Controller. The data is Invalid.

This is caused in XP by the new PCI Registry entry defaulting to "Read" under Permissions. Also, the Device Manager shows the typical yellow query against other Devices/PCI Simple Communications Controller.

Suggested Solution/Fix:

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\PCI

Open each sub-key: Ven_XXXX... In the right pane read the Value Data for each DEVICEDESC, until you find your modem. Once found, right click the 3&71aaa sub-key and select Permissions and under the word "Allow", select "Full Control", click OK then go to File/Exit.

Then go to the Device Manager, right click on the device name that matches the "DEVICEDESC" value you changed in the registry. Select Properties/Driver/Update Driver. Windows will now ask you for the disk or CD-ROM that contains the driver for the failing device.

This error can also occur when configuring drivers for a such as SCSI cards, Network cards, Sound Cards, or other peripherals. This symptom appears to occur when there has been a recent hardware configuration change within Windows XP. This error is believed to be due to an issue occurring when hardware enumeration takes place by the operating system.

Errors from trying to use Add or Remove after installing SP1

Add and Remove vs. System Restore - Anshul Rawat [MS]

System Restore does not completely uninstall any program by itself if restoring to a point prior to the program installation. Since system restore is based on an inclusionary model, any file added or modified by the installation which System Restore does not monitor or files added to or modified in a non monitored drive will not be tracked by System Restore.

Thus System Restore cannot delete or undo any modifications made to these files. To remove all the changes an installation may have made on the system, the user should first use the Add/Remove option in the control panel to remove the application prior to using System Restore. System Restore however will undo all recorded changes made to the registry & monitored
files caused by the application install including:

a.. Delete monitored files the program installation may have added to the system
b.. Undo modifications to monitored files made by the installation
c.. Replace the current registry with the registry snapshot taken when the restore point chosen was created. (*note: some
current values will persist)
d.. Any file type not monitored by System Restore added or modified on the system will not be restored or removed. E.g.
.jpg, .txt files.

Despite a slightly annoying installation process, version X2 (read: 12) of Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo continues to offer the same high performance and full feature set of earlier editions. The digital image-editing program will fit the needs of many photographers and designers.

A well-designed and intuitive interface offers easy access to all of your digital images, and the individual components--such as tool selectors, palettes, and layer windows--can be dragged and dropped anywhere on the screen. Excellent one-click photo adjustments such as Smart Photo Fix or One Step Noise Removal will be godsends for photographers with busy schedules.

One of the most noticeable updates in X2 is the new graphite workspace theme, which gives the app a slick, 21st century look. A tabbed interface makes switching between photos a breeze, and the library organizer is available as either a palette tool or another tab in the image browser.

The organizer is one of the strongest features of Paint Shop Pro Photo, and a new Express Lab feature makes batch editing even easier. We did notice a CPU slowdown when using the organizer with large libraries, but otherwise the application was quite stable, even when editing very large BMP files. A new Learning Center provides contextual help for specific features, but we found searching the regular help topics to be more informative.

The installation is the most disappointing part of the trial. It requires registering for a free Corel account, which in turn requires a valid e-mail address. Adobe uses the same practice, but it's an annoying trend. You should also note that within the "Advanced" installation setting, Paint Shop Pro Photo is automatically set to become the default application for all your major image-file formats.

Once you get Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 installed and working on your machine, you'll find a very powerful photo editor and organizer that is quite easy to learn and use. A full 30-day trial gives you plenty of time to determine whether or not you'd like the full version.

"Generic volume cannot be stopped right now" error when Removing a pen-drive

When you try to remove a USB pen-drive by using “Safely Remove Hardware > Safely remove USB Mass Storage device” option, windows should stop all the read-write operations on the drive so that the drive can be removed.

But sometimes when you try to eject the USB device by using “Safely remove USB Mass Storage device” option, it shows a message box which says:

“The Device Generic volume cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the device later”

In such case its not safe to remove the pen drive as it can get corrupt or get damaged. Many of us face such problem in removing pen-drive. In this post we will see how to fix such issue.

Let’s see why it happens and the fix

Fix:

This error comes when you have an application which is running from your pen drive or may be some file or document opened from your pen-drive when you are removing your drive.

In short, some file on your pen drive is in use by some other program on that computer. So close all such files or applications and try removing the drive.

It happens sometimes that you have no application running from your pen drive or any file opened in your knowledge but still when you try to remove the pen-drive it shows this error message shown above. In that case you can use a free application called Unlocker which will help you to remove your pen drive from your windows.

What is Unlocker?

Unlocker is an explorer extension that allows you with a simple right-click of the mouse on a file, folder or pen drive to get rid of error message like the one mentioned above.

How To Remove USB Pen Drive with Unlocker?

1. Download Unlocker from here and install it on your computer.

2. Right click on your USB pen drive in my computer and select Unlocker.

3. A new window will open that will list all the busy handles of files being used on your pen drive. Now click the button which says Unlock All ( Highlighted in the image below )

After clicking Unlock All try to remove your pen drive normally, through “Safely Remove Hardware” dialog.

If still you are not able to remove pen drive then try clicking the Kill Process button in Unlocker.

My computer does not detect pen drives and other USB devices like iPod or external hard drive

If none of your USB devices detect ,this could be due to wrong registry entries. i.e you need to delete UpperFilters and the LowerFilters registry values.

Follow the procedure listed below to correct your registry:

1. Open Start >> Run, and type "regedit" (without double quotes), and click OK.

2. Locate UpperFilters registry value. it resides in the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E980-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

3. Click on Edit menu, and select Delete and click OK.
Note: If you receive an error when you try to delete the registry subkey, you may not have correct permissions to edit the subkey.

4. Locate LowerFilters registry value. It resides in the following registry subkey:

5. Click on Edit menu, and select Delete and click OK.

Kernel32.dll

The Kernel32.dll file handles memory management, input/output operations, and interrupts. When you start Windows, Kernel32.dll is loaded into a protected memory space so that other programs do not take over that memory space.

On occasion, you may receive an invalid page fault (IPF) error message. This error message occurs when a program tries to access the Kernel32.dll protected memory space. Occasionally, the error message is caused by one particular program, and other times the error message is provoked by multiple files and programs.

If the problem results from running one program, the program needs to be replaced. If the problem occurs when you access multiple files and programs, the damage is likely caused by damaged hardware.

You may want to clean boot the computer to help you identify the particular third-party memory-resident software. Note that programs that are not memory-resident can also cause IPF error messages.

Bad memory modules:

You can test your memory modules by inserting the command: DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS /TESTMEM:ON into your Config.sys file. You can use the System Configuration Utility:

Select Start>> Run and type: msconfig [Enter]
Next, select the Config.sys tab and add the HIMEM.SYS line (above) by pressing the New button.
Windows will tell you to reboot your computer.
Watch your screen for a message; "HIMEM has detected unreliable memory at address xx:xxxxxx" which will certainly indicate that there's a memory problem.

Fix Connectivity Issues

It sounds crazy, but 95 percent of all Internet connectivity problems can be solved by power-cycling both the router and the modem. Turn them both off, and then turn the modem back on first. Once its "sync" or signal light comes on, turn on your router.

Use Encryption

You've probably heard this before, but it bears repeating: Always enable your router's wireless security! Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) encryption is the oldest (and weakest) form of security; the newer (and stronger) Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) and WPA-2 are the best protection available today for home users.

Update Your Router's Firmware

All routers include internal read-only chips with embedded instructions that can be updated by the manufacturer. Router manufacturers generally update a product's firmware to increase performance as well as to resolve bugs and security issues, so it's wise to keep your router's firmware up-to-date. Check the manufacturer's Web site for the latest updates.

Boost Your Wireless Signal

If walls and distance are causing wireless signal degradation, you can do a few things to boost it. Move your router to higher ground—the signal radiates downward. You can also try a signal extender (or repeater), which boosts the signal. Finally, high-gain antennas will work, but they only focus the signal in one direction.

Change Admin Password

Every router has a well-known default password that's used to access the router's browser-based configuration page. Most setup wizards will make you change this password, but not all do. If not, be sure to change it yourself to prevent unwanted hangers-on from changing your network's settings.

Go Back to Factory Settings

If you've lost or forgotten your router's login credentials, you can get around this predicament by resetting the router to its factory settings. Do this by holding down the button on the back of it for 30 seconds. Disable SSID Broadcast

Unless you disable it, your router broadcasts its service set identifier (SSID)—the name of your network—which allows your neighbors to see (and attempt to gain access to) your network. Instead, disable broadcasting, making the network appear as "SSID not broadcast." Access the unnamed network by typing in the SSID name when prompted.

Change the Default SSID

Change your pre-defined, default SSID—leaving it as "Linksys," for example, tells the world that you haven't configured your router, which invites attackers.

Filter by MAC Address

Every piece of networking gear includes a unique "fingerprint" called a media access control, or MAC, address. You can configure your router to filter connections using these addresses so that only your computers can connect to your network. Most routers will show you connected devices, so adding an adapter's MAC address is a one-click process.

Step Up to 5GHz

The majority of today's networks operate in the crowded 2.4GHz frequency range, which is shared by microwaves, cordless phones, and other home networks. To avoid possible interference, many new routers are capable of broadcasting at 5GHz, which has 23 wide-open channels as opposed to 2.4GHz's three non-overlapping channels.

Limit Your Number of DHCP Clients

Most people use their router as a DHCP server; when clients connect, the router dynamically assigns IP addresses from a large pool of addresses. Limiting that list to the number of clients in your home, however, will help prevent interlopers from hopping onto your network.

Use Your Router's Firewall

Two features make most hardware firewalls more powerful than software firewalls: stateful packet inspection (SPI) and network address translation (NAT). SPI examines packets' content and behavior before granting access, and NAT hides all PCs connected to the router from the Internet, "translating" their IP addresses into private ones that are unreachable from outside the firewall.

Change Your Channel

Wireless B and G (and some N) routers operate at the 2.4GHz frequency, which only has three non-overlapping channels: 1, 6 and 11. By default, your router will most likely be using one of these channels, and the bad news is so your neighbors' routers as well. If you experience dropped connections, sluggish performance or both, a good first step is to switch the channel. If it's set to channel 1, go to 11. If it's set to 6, try either 1 or 11 for best results.

If a network adapter's software takes control of your wireless network, it can be difficult to put Windows back in charge. First, click Start, then Run, then type services.msc. No display on monitor

Solution:

The following is monitor troubleshooting. If your monitor receives a proper display until it gets into Windows 3.x, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows ME, or Windows XP please refer to document CH000192.

Monitor is not on

Make sure the monitor is on. If no power light (green or orange light) is seen on the monitor display try pressing the power button until it comes on. If no light comes on after several attempts continue to below connections not connected properly.

Computer is asleep

If your computer monitor was on and you stepped away from the computer and upon returning it was black it's likely that the computer is asleep. Try moving your mouse, clicking the mouse buttons, and/or pressing any key (space bar) on the keyboard to wake it up.

Connections not connected properly

Make sure that you are connecting the monitor to the back of the computer in the 15-pin connector as shown to the right or older computer 9-pin connection.

If the computer is properly plugged in, make sure it's getting getting power.

If you are not receiving power from a known working wall outlet and if the power cord is removable, replace it with the one connected to the computer and attempt to power on the monitor again. If the monitor still does not get power or it is not removable, it is recommended that the monitor be replaced or serviced at a local TV / Computer repair shop.

If the monitor is receiving power, check the status light.

If the light is orange or flashing ensure that the monitor is not in a suspend mode by moving the mouse or pressing a key on the keyboard. If the computer does not get a display by moving the mouse or touching the keyboard, turn off the computer and monitor and reconnect the data cable from the back of the computer, and if removable, the back of the monitor. Turn the computer back on; if you still encounter the same issue, continue reading through the other possibilities.

Monitor settings are not correct

Ensure that the brightness and contrast is turned up or attempt to adjust the brightness and contrast. If adjusting the brightness or contrast has no affect on the monitor continue reading through the other possibilities.

No Post

Does the computer beep when it is powered on and/or does it appear that the computer has activity? If the computer does not beep or beeps abnormally it is possible that the computer itself is experiencing a hardware issue or is exhibiting a No Post.

Steps on troubleshooting an irregular POST or no beeps can be found on document CH000607.

Hardware Issue

If you have followed the above recommendations and are still encountering the same issue, it is likely that the computer may have either a bad video card or monitor. The best method of determining this is to do one or both of the following:

Disconnect your monitor and attempt to connect it to another computer. This can be a friend or family's computer and/or it can be taken to a service center.
Borrow a computer monitor and connect it to your computer. This will not harm the other computer monitor in any way.

If your monitor works on another computer it is safe to assume that the video card or potentially the motherboard within the computer is bad. Steps in troubleshooting a video card can be found on document CH001028.

If another monitor works on your computer it is safe to assume that your monitor is bad.

How to Delete An Undeletable File

Click the Start Button.
Click All Programs followed by Accessories.
In the Accessories drop down menu click Command Prompt.
The Command Prompt window will now open.
Close all other programs that are running with the exception of the Command Prompt.
Now click Start and then Run.
In the Run dialog box type: taskmgr.exe.
In the Task Manager window click on the Processes tab.
From the processes list highlight Explorer.exe and then click the End Process button.
Don't close the Task Manager window, leave it open. You should have the Command Prompt and the Task Manager window open.
Now return to the Command Prompt window and change the directory to the directory that contains the file(s) you wish to delete.

RESOLUTION:
To resolve this problem, you must replace the missing or corrupted Ntfs.sys file. To do so, follow these steps:
Start your computer with the Windows XP CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive. You are prompted with the following option:
To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R
When you are prompted with this option, press R to select it.
At the command prompt, type the following commands (press ENTER after each command): cd \windows\system32\drivers ren ntfs.sys ntfs.old
Note: This step renames the corrupted Ntfs.sys file to Ntfs.old. If the Ntfs.sys file is not found, then the file was
missing. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
copy cd:\i386\ntfs.sys drive:\windows\system32\drivers
Where cd is the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive that contains the Windows XP CD, and drive is the drive that you installed Windows XP to.
Remove the Windows XP CD from your CD-ROM drive, type quit, and then press ENTER to quit the Recovery Console.

How to Clear the ARP Cache

The Microsoft Windows ARP cache will occasionally become corrupt and need to be cleared. The first symptom you are likely to notice is that connections to web pages will time out and fail. If you troubleshoot further, you will notice that you can `ping` your IP address and also 127.0.0.1, but not other IP addresses. If you try to use Microsoft Windows to repair the network connection, you will receive an error message that says:

Clearing the ARP cache For assistance, contact the person who manages your network. To fix this error, you will need to clear the ARP cache. This is done with the `netsh` command:

Uninstall Additional Windows Components

To add additional components to the Add/Remove Programs list (Windows Components): Start Windows Explorer, and navigate to the inf folder in your Windows folder. Windows Explorer must be set to Show hidden files and folders. You can adjust this from the Tools menu, Folder Options, View tab (and while you are there, un-check Hide extensions for known file types too). Windows XP chkdsk

Windows XP chkdsk is a tool available for you in Windows. Everyone should run it from time to time because it can prevent your computer from becoming unstable.

There are different reasons why the data on your hard disk can become corrupt. Windows keeps "meta-data" about each file and every directory on your hard drive in a Master File Table (MFT).

Meta-data is data about the data. Windows needs it to physically locate your files on the hard drive, to know about user access rights for each file and so on.

In some cases, the information in the MFT can become corrupt. This can be the case when your computer experiences a sudden power cut or a system hang. To make things even worse, your hard disk may show signs of wear over time and some sectors may become unreadable.

Windows XP chkdsk is the tool to handle these situations. It can fix logical errors on your hard disk and it can detect bad sectors and flag them so that Windows no longer uses them.

It's a valuable tool, but it has a disadvantage …

… checking and fixing an entire hard disk is a tough job, so chkdsk can take a considerable amount of TIME under certain conditions.

The time needed for chkdsk to run is very hard to predict because it depends on many factors :

Overall speed of your pc
Number of files and directories on the disk
Size of the disk
Amount of RAM
...

A gigantic disk with 2 extremely large files will take considerably less time to check than a small disk with 2 million tiny files, but so many other factors are to be considered … never easy to tell.

Windows XP chkdsk wants exclusive access to the computer

Schedule to run chkdsk at a time when you don't need your computer. In most cases chkdsk wants to restart your computer and during the time that it runs, you won't have access to your computer. You can always interrupt chkdsk during its work, but this is certainly not recommended.

How to use Windows XP chkdsk

Click the start button
Right-click "My Computer" and select "Explore"
Right-click the disk you want to check and select "Properties"
In the properties dialog click the tab "Tools"
Click "check now"
The "checking disk" dialog appears, check both options and click start
You will probably see a message that chkdsk wants exclusive access to the disk and therefore wants to begin first thing after you restart your computer. Accept by clicking ok.
Restart your computer

When your computer restarts you will see chkdsk advancing through several different stages of verification, examining your hard disk. If it detects no errors, Windows will continue to start to your normal desktop. If there are errors, chkdsk presents a report with what it has done and waits for your confirmation.

Why not schedule chkdsk to run while you sleep ?

Note : To schedule a Windows XP chkdsk task with task scheduler you need a Windows administrator account with a non-blank password.

In Explorer, navigate to c:\program files
If you see a message that this is a folder with hidden files, just click the link to show the files
Right-click an empty area in the right part of the Explorer window and select new -> text document
Windows creates a file named New Text Document.txt
Rename the file to "Restart and perform chkdsk.bat" (without the quotes)
Windows warns about changing the filename extension : click yes
Right-click your newly created file and select "edit"
Windows opens the new blank file in your default text editor : type the following lines and make sure not to press the enter key after the last line

Save the file and close your text editor
Close all other programs except the Eplorer window where the newly created file is listed
Double-click the new file and see what happens (don't touch anything from this point on until your computer is ready with chkdsk

Now that you know that your batch file is working it's time to automatically schedule it.

Click start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Scheduled Tasks
In the Scheduled Tasks window, double-click "Add Scheduled Task"
Click next
Click browse
Navigate to the Restart and perform chkdsk.bat file that you created in the previous step and click "open"
Choose the frequency for this task (monthly would be a good minimum)
Enter the day and time to perform the task
Enter the (administrator) username and non-blank password (must be non-blank or the task won't run). Be careful to enter the password correctly because Windows doesn't verify it here.
Click next and then click finish

Windows XP Quick Launch Toolbar

The QLT contains small icons that start programs fast. Usually it sits next to the start button on the taskbar.

Display the Quick Launch toolbar

If you don't see the QLT on your taskbar, right-click an empty spot on your taskbar and select toolbars->Quick Launch.

Maybe the QLT doesn't show the icons you want. You can add programs to your QLT like this :

Click start->all programs and navigate to the program you want to add
right-click this program and drag it to the QLT
you will see an l-shaped cursor where Windows will insert the icon when you release the mouse button
after you release the mouse button, select "copy here"

Don't select "move here" because doing so will remove the program from its original location under all programs.

To remove an icon from the Quick Launch toolbar, right-click it and select delete. This will only remove the icon from the QLT, not from your computer.

You will notice pretty soon that the space on the QLT is fairly limited. To enlarge it, move your mouse pointer over the vertical dotted pattern just to the right from the QLT until it changes into a double arrow and then drag the handle to the right. If you don't see the dotted pattern, you need to unlock the taskbar first. Right click an empty space on the taskbar and select "Lock the taskbar" if there is a checkmark.

Short and sweet

When you hold your mouse pointer over one of the icons on the Quick Launch toolbar you will notice that a description appears. The default description is often veeery long or obscure.

The description of the icons is sometimes rather long.

To adapt it to your needs, right click it and select properties.

In the dialog that appears, you will notice a tab "general" and a tab "shortcut".

In the "shortcut" tab, use the field "comment" to put any text you like. in the tab "general" you can enter any text in the field next to the icon.

Windows uses the combination of these two fields to show when you hold your mouse pointer over any icon on the QLT. Feel free to change it in whatever suits you.

Open your documents fast with the Quick Launch toolbar

Do you work with a certain document every day ? Why not make a shortcut to this document on the QLT ?

Use Explorer to locate the document
Right-click the document and drag it onto the QLT
Move the l-shaped cursor to the position where you want to create the shortcut
Release the mouse button and select "create shortcuts here"

Open your favorite websites fast

Right-click an empty space on your desktop
Select "new shortcut"
In the dialog type www.windows-help-central.com (or whatever website you like) and click next
Give the shortcut a name and click finish

Windows puts the new shortcut on the desktop and you can easily drag it to the QLT.

Create a mail message fast with the Quick Launch toolbar

You can also create an icon to start a new email message with one single click. It's easy.

Microsoft knows that the taskbar is very important and that's why Windows offers a ton of possibilities to customize it.

Customize the Windows XP taskbar :

If you want to customize the taskbar, you need to unlock it. When the taskbar is unlocked, it shows a pattern of dots just next to the start button.

If you don't see these dots, your taskbar is locked. To unlock it, right-click on an empty spot on the taskbar and remove the checkmark on "Lock the Taskbar" by clicking that option.

When you move your mouse pointer over the upper edge of the taskbar it changes into a double arrow. Now you can drag the upper edge upwards to make the taskbar broader. When the taskbar is two or more lines broad, Windows shows the day of the week and the date in addition to the time (see image 1)

If you like to work faster in Windows, you can put a full-blown Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer address bar on your taskbar. This is also visible in image 1 at the top of this page. You can use this address bar to enter :

web addresses
a command that you would ordinarily type in the "run" box from the start menu (e.g. regedit, ping, cmd, ...)
the name of a folder
the name of a document
a search term that you want to look up on the internet in your favorite search engine

Right-click an empty area on the taskbar and choose "toolbars" and then "address". On the right, next to the system tray, you will see the word "address". You can drag the address bar handle (the dot pattern at the left of the word "address") over to the left. The input field becomes visible now.

If you feel that the "Go" button at the right of the address field takes up too much space, go via control panel to "internet options", click the "advanced" tab and scroll down to "show go button in address bar" and unselect it. You can even right-click the word address on the address bar and deselect "show title" to clean up even more.

Navigate from the Windows XP taskbar

If you want to add a favorite folder on your Windows XP taskbar, right-click an empty space on the taskbar and select "toolbars". Then choose "new toolbar" and navigate to the folder you want on your taskbar. Once selected, you will need to use the handle of this new toolbar to position it properly on the taskbar. To remove this toolbar, simply right-click the taskbar, select "toolbars" and deselect the name of the folder you just added.
